House System

Organisation
In terms of school organisation, upon entering the College each student is allocated to one of the seven Houses in the College: Avila, Bosco, Chisholm, MacKillop, Newman, Polding or Xavier.

The House Coordinators and College Registrar are involved in the allocation process. They take into account existing family connections with a particular House but overall attempt to balance students on the basis of numbers, gender, academic and sporting abilities and interests.

The House works under the direction of a staff member, who is appointed House Coordinator. The House Coordinator has responsibility for the welfare and overall management of students in each House. Five student House Captains (three from Years 11 and 12 and two from Year 9) are appointed to support the House Coordinator as role models.

Pastoral Groups
In each House there are six Pastoral Groups. These groups comprise students from Years 7 to 12. Each group averages 22 students and works under the guidance of a Pastoral Teacher.

Students meet in their Pastoral Group for 7 minutes at the start of each day. In this time administrative matters are dealt with and friendly interaction, both formal and informal, takes place between the group members. With this approach a real sense of community is promoted between all staff and students at the College.

The Pastoral Teacher is charged with a special duty of care and is the first "port of call" for parental contact in terms of transfer of information and disciplinary matters. Pastoral Teachers monitor their students’ attendance and will contact parents to follow-up any unexplained absences. In addition the Pastoral Teacher is able to offer assistance to the student on academic and welfare matters. Pastoral teachers work in cooperation with the House Co-ordinators. Serious welfare issues are referred to the Deputy Principal – Pastoral Welfare or the College Counsellor.

Fundraising
Fundraising activities are an important aspect of social justice and community support activities at the College. Each House takes on one fundraising project each year. Students and staff work together on a range of activities to help raise awareness of particular issues and provide financial or material support to organizations or individuals in the community.

Inter-House Competition
The Champion House at Nagle College is determined as a result of performance in four key areas of College life: academic performance, sport, creative/artistic events, and community involvement over the school year.

The top placed House in academic performance, sport, creative/artistic and community involvement will be awarded a Shield to mark this achievement.

The Champion House Shield is presented each year at Presentation Night in December and will be determined by aggregate of House performance over the four minor shields.

Academic, Sport, Artistic/Creative Shields
Classification of Competitions/Events are classified as A, B or C events. The criteria used to classify events includes:

  • the number of students involved
  • the year levels in which competition occurs
  • the duration of the competition.

“A” POINT
events tend to involve the whole school and include major carnivals and competitions associated with compulsory attendance/participation, eg Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Academic (Semester 1 and 2).

“B” POINT events tend to involve a smaller number of students across several year levels and participation may be on a voluntary basis, eg Triathlon, Battle of the Minds, Inter-House Talent Night.

“C” POINT events could include smaller scale competitions/events involving relatively small numbers of students or specific year levels in a smaller time frame like lunchtime recreation, eg WestPAC Mathematics Competitions, University of NSW Science Competitions, National Geographic Geography Competitions, Nagle Public Speaking Competitons.

Points are awarded according to the event category. The emphasis of the various House competitions is on participation and involvement in situations that value the diversity of talents of our students.

NB: Other events may be added to the overall competition after approval by the House Coordinators Group.
